a) 2010 album cover for The Sword by Warp Riders by Dan McPharlin features a small spacecraft that incorporates elements from Alien's Narcissus escape shuttle. (Thanks to Dave De Prave for pointing this out to me)

detail showing the spacecraft

b) So the artist only wanted to create something with a general similarity, for obvious reasons, but the back engines are very similar.

a) My idea is that Kei Kobayashi referenced "John Carter et Geronimo Martinez luttent pour le son parfait " from Moebius' portfolio Rumbas

These two images have lines going across the landscape with the central figure staring up, then perhaps one sharp rock is made larger.  There are other points of comparison as listed below

Along with this, I think that Kei Kobayashi also referenced "Judith Beheading Holofernes" (1611-1612) by Artemisia Gentileschi which looks to me as if Moebius too referenced it in his illustration, so it would seem as if there was some insight into what was going on in Moebius illustration. (See Moebius' "John Carter et Geronimo Martinez luttent pour le son parfait " (1994) references "Judith Beheading Holofernes" (1611-1612) by Artemisia Gentileschi?)

b) Faces with ears covered, looking up

c) The shadow becomes a blue platform

d) The person hanging on has been reduced to a squiggly line which has been turned into the broken remains of a glass shell. Perhaps the glass shell also grew out of the presence of the balloons

e) The left balloon has transformed into the spaceship.

Unnamed illustration by Kei Kobayashi,

a) It looks as if the background of planets conforms to "Judith Beheading Holofernes",(1611-1612) by Artemisia Gentileschi which is a painting that I think that Moebius might have taken half a look at some point leading up to the moment he drew "John Carter et Geronimo Martinez luttent pour le son parfait".

Judith Beheading Holofernes",(1611-1612) by Artemisia Gentileschi

b)  Images side by side. It looks as if the background of planets conforms to "Judith Beheading Holofernes",(1611-1612) by Artemisia Gentileschi which I think that Moebius might have taken half a look at some point leading up to the moment he drew "John Carter et Geronimo Martinez luttent pour le son parfait",

The head of the upper woman becomes the head of the figure in Kobayashi's illustration.

The sword becomes the division between the woman's legs, which happens in Moebius' illstration as well

c) In 小林系's drawing, the man's skirt becomes transformed into the planet on the left as does the left mountain also transform into the planet on the left,

d) The woman holding the man down has her head and shoulders are transformed into a smaller planet on the right and her arms are transformed into the planetary ring.

e) The knee in this case becomes the spaceship with the upper leg hidden under the skirt becoming the direction that the ship is flying with its exhaust trail behind it, and this would be in relation to the visible elbow of the middle becoming the side of the helmet.

Source quotes
  1. Michael Broom: For those interested, Here's my initial sketch..you can see how rough and loose I started, and some of the notes i made to myself before starting. Then I just scanned this image into photoshop andd started to over lay colors and textures that I liked. I really had a tonal feel and atmoshere that I was going for...I wanted the thing stepping through the fog towards the character in the foreground (Which i almost darkened and blurred to obscure him totally).(AVPGalaxy, August 1st 2010)
  2. Michael Broom:  As far as the Predator not having armor and such, i just didnt feel like drawing it.... Besides, there's nothing that i can think of that would be more intimidating than to be facing a big-ass monster with nothing but a spear. It was also kinda Inspired by all of those old Frazetta Conan images, and that dude NEVER painted clothes, haha
  3. Michael Broom: Well, it's not supposed to be completely a Giger alien, (but it does have some elements of that)...Perhaps a hybris of three different life-forms. Sorry, Fellahs... i'm no good at following rules.. I just like to make em up and come up with cool stuff i havent seen before. (AVPGalaxy, August 1st 2010)
  4. Michael Broom:Why is it so big and have eyes though? -it's big Because I wanted it to feel imposing, and it has four eyes becuase i like lotsa eyes. (liking the concept or not is kind of a personal preference...I'd assumed it would be unpopular, there seems to be a pre-conceived notion of what a hybrid SHOULD or should not look like.) More than anything, i was trying to get an 'atmosphere' of a thing coming through the fog, and i liked the idea of a Predator cemetery.  (AVPGalaxy, August 1st 2010)
