Alien Production Timeline November 1978

Not related to the Alien production other than a sign of the dread in the air of that time, the Jones Town massacre takes place, a religious cult suicide with 914 deaths in South America.

Tuesday 20th November 1978
Shooting Int. Infirmary scene 84a, Int. Storage area, scene 86pt, and Maintenance Pump room, scene 88pt. A double was required for Dallas' hand along with a costume.

The props were Brett's pen, rubber gloves and continuity dressing in the storage area. Special effects involved acid effects on the floor, cieling and space boot, and also acid effects on the pen top.

The art department would supply acid damage on the floor and ceiling pieces.

A nurse was there to stand by on the set for first aid. The editorial department were there with moviola and relevant film for matching. Catering for AM and PM with trolleys for 30 people

Tuesday 21st  November 1978
Shooting of the interior of the egg chamber, scene on 74pt, requiring an inverted egg, with contents, and upright egg to open , a double costume for the character, Derek Holt would be there as the double for Kane, a costume for the double along with a backpack and helmet would be required.

Catering for a team of 30 people was required in the form of trolleys.

Wednesday, 22nd  November 197
That day, the interior of the derelict egg chamber, scene no 74pt had to be completed and scene no no. 97Apt were being filmed. So this meant pickup shots.

Stand ins for Kane and Ash were used. Props required were a gun, a hand lamp, perspex tray and rubber gloves.

Special effects item for that day were the inverted egg and its contents, an upright egg to open, a back pack and helmet .

The art department would supply the examination console in the infirmary. Wardrobe department would supply a double costume for Kane.

There would be the facehugger with seafood contents.

As usual editorial department were there with moviola and relevant film for matching.

Catering would supply AM and PM trolleys on stage for 30 people.

The electrical department would supply Kane's hand lamp. Recording and playback facilities for the panaflex camera would be necessary

Filming of interior of Infirmary, scene number 97Aptm and interior of maintenance garage, scene number 149Apt and 135Bpt


Props include perspex tray and rubber gloves. Special effects/art department supply Ash's examination console in the infirmary and the practical tracker.

The scene 97Apt would require the face hugger with seafood contents. The video department would supply plessy blips. Recording and playback facilities would be required for panaflex. Moviola and relevant film for matching on stage. AM and PM trolleys on stage for 30 people

Friday 24th November 1978
Filming of scene no 129pt, INT. Maintenance pump room, scene no. 132pt INT. Maintenance claw room. and Int. Mess, scene 152.pt174pt.

Fill in are used for Ripley, Ash and Parker, with the latter being played by Andrew Scott. Props required would include nets, trackers, flame throwers and dipping birds

The SFX / Art department would supply a panel for Ash's hand to punch through. Cats would be used for the filming, they would be on the set by 8.30. As usual, the moviola and revelevant film for matching on the stage. AM and PM trolleys would be on stage catering for 30 people

Filming of:

Then move to Stage 3

2. Int. 'B' Deck Octagon Sc. No. 195pt

Props include table dressing for sc. 154 and cat box
Cats are on set by 8.30am
Recording and playback facilities are required along with a movieola and relevant material on set.
AM and PM trolleys would be on stage catering for 30 people

Tuesday 28h November 1978

Pick up shots for INT. Maintenance pump room. Sc No. 186 Apt to complete, along with INT. Mess sc.no.174pt. Then moving to Stage 3, they work on INT. "B" Deck Octagon Sc.No. 195pt

Dereck Holt performs as the alien, and stand ins are required for Ash and Ripley. 

The cat box is required from the prop department and this days is a day when cats are brought onto the set for 8.30am. A prepared panel is required from The Art Department.  

The moviola and relevant film for matching on stage was brought along as usual. Catering was required for 30 people with AM & PM trolleys

Thursday 30th November 1978
The unit have to be on Stage 3 by 8.30am. A pick-up shoot days at the completion of main filming, which focused on cutaways and special effects sequences. 

This sheet was issued for the ninth insert shoot day on Thursday 30th November 1978.  

All of the roles were to be performed by stand-in performers for the pick-up shots.
